Jälleennäkeminen

I feel like I've been posting for weeks about such ordinary things, but this week is far from it! On Tuesday we celebrated both the Finnish May Day, vappu, which is a national holiday, and the beginning of our American cousin's visit to Finland! This is Amy's cousin as well as mine, and actually the last time I met him was at Amy's wedding in 2001. I wish you were here too Amy, and in some strange way that I can't explain it even feels a little like you are!

The problem with a blog like this that is available to anyone in the whole world is that there are limitations to posting pictures of what is in fact most important in our everyday lives: people. So the pictures above end up looking like a very unpopular restaurant instead of the settings of our great reunion on Tuesday. You will just have to imagine all the happiness, nervousness, and excitement that was present in these rooms!

Oh I remember that bread! Your dad would let it get so stale, then get it wet and put it in the toaster.

Is there a name for those pitchers? They have a really interesting shape.

Yes, I believe he still does that!

The second to last picture is how bread has been traditionally dried in Finland, though not that much anymore. Bread used to be dried just to make it keep, not really for the crunch... and they didn't have toasters to soften it up again!

The pitchers are all made by Arabia, which is an old and very esteemed brand here (many people collect them and the prices are unbelievable). This place has a shop that specializes in vintage Arabia, as old as from the late 1800s.
